Long before the Texas trail drives, there were cattlemen in Florida, working half-wild herds through palmetto, pine, and swamp.
In the flatwoods of North Florida, Math Albritton runs the Big J, land his grandfather once bled to defend and believed was given to him in trust by God. Twenty years ago his wife, Patricia, put the reins in his hands and told him he was a man who could never ignore a true thing. Now she is gone. The faith they shared has gone silent in him, and the Lord who gives has become, to Math, only the Lord who takes.
Patricia is never far. She is in the house he cannot bear to sleep in, in the verses she read to him on the porch swing, and in her small pink Bible, which he carries everywhere and has not yet opened. Grief is the fire. What it burns away, and what it leaves standing, is the story.
When a young fence rider is found dead at the boundary line, Math goes to the ground with his foreman, Buck Sandlin, who will not leave his side, and Sheriff John Hartley, who calls him “son” and tells him his work now is to go on, and to go on clean. An old boundary stone, buried family history, and a story that almost fits pull him toward a fast conclusion. The truth will ask more of him than certainty.
And at the edge of the pines, a quiet cowboy called Boar Hog keeps watch. He was there before anyone knew to look for him, and he has not come by chance.
Math’s road back to God will be neither quick nor clean. There will be bitterness and anger as surely as grace, and he will not walk it alone. The young hands on the Big J, the families across the fence, the neighbors who knew Patricia: each of them carries a struggle of their own, with losses and victories of their own. Some nights will be long. None of them is the end of the story.
About the series
Conceived on the grand scale of the land it comes from, CRACKER: Truth & Fire is a prestige drama about how faith is actually lived: slowly, imperfectly and at real cost, as one Old Florida family and the community around it struggle through grief, anger and failure toward lives that bear witness to the existence, power and love of God. It walks through the dark, in the good, the bad and the ugly, and it does not stay there.

The Characters

A generational cattleman who reads the ground like scripture. The day he loses Patricia, he decides God only takes. The truth won’t let him leave it there.

Math’s late wife and his partner in the work and the faith. To her the Big J was a prayer. She put the reins in his hands, and her small pink Bible is still with him.

The Big J’s foreman. Calls Math “brother,” holds him up when he can’t stand, and saw something on the highway he hasn’t told a soul.

A quiet rider, timeless and unhurried. He doesn’t happen upon the Big J by chance. He was sent, and he is watching.

Plain clothes, a small gold badge, no gun. He calls Math “son,” calls grief a trust to be carried, and won’t let him mistake being certain for being true.
Character portraits are concept art. Casting is underway.
The People

Producer
James Pitt was raised in Williston, in Levy County, in the Florida cattle country this story comes from. After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard and building his first company, he reached a critical decision point and dedicated his life to serving God in every part of it. To his own surprise, and to the surprise of those around him, that decision led him not to professional ministry but to filmmaking, first as an actor and then as a producer. His acting work includes James Cameron’s Avatar. He won Best Actor at the 2023 LA Indies Fest for Because of This, which he co-produced, and was nominated for Best Actor at the 2013 Idyllwild CinemaFest for There / Not There. He considers his life a permanent mission to the film industry and to protecting the storytelling of our nation. He shaped Billy Ray Hunter II’s short story “Heirloom” into the pilot, “The Line,” and produces the series from Jacksonville.

Creator
Billy Ray Hunter II is the creator of CRACKER: Truth & Fire. A working Florida rancher and longtime detective, he knows this cattle country both from the daily work of the land and from many years of watching what happens on it. The series grew from Billy Ray’s captivating stories, drawn from years of ranching and law enforcement, which he brought to James Pitt with the request that James take them further. He continues to develop the story with James, contributing many of the ideas that shape where it goes.
A series from Experimentum Crucis Media, produced with Cracker Cowboy Productions.
